Heather Bemis, PhD


Dr. Heather Bemis is a clinical psychologist licensed in New Hampshire and California. She has specialized expertise working with children and families facing health concerns and supporting individuals of all ages experiencing grief in its many nuanced forms. She is trained in empirically supported treatments across a range of ages and settings, and enjoys providing evidence-based and empathic care to help children, teens, young adults and parents build skills and confidence in facing challenges including anxiety, depression, behavioral challenges, and adjustment to major life changes.

Prior to joining Hanover CBT, Dr. Bemis served as faculty at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles where she provided psychotherapy to families facing complex medical illness, led research to improve caregiver support, and became a nationally recognized leader in pediatric palliative care. Dr. Bemis earned a B.A. in Psychology from Williams College and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychological Science from Vanderbilt University. She completed an APA-accredited internship and postdoctoral fellowship with the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, focusing on pediatric psychology, perinatal health challenges, and traumatic stress. She also trained with NYU Child Study Center’s ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders service.

Dr. Bemis uses a flexible approach that centers Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), while drawing from other research-backed therapies including mindfulness, behavioral skill building, and problem-solving strategies tailored to each client’s needs. She brings a warm, collaborative, and strengths-oriented style to her work, creating thoughtful and caring therapeutic relationships while also making room for lightness and humor throughout the process. Dr. Bemis values partnering with clients and families to better understand their experiences, build resilience, and identify meaningful paths toward growth and healing.
