General Questions & Getting Started
-
We provide evidence-based mental health care for children, teens and adults, including individual therapy, health psychology, psychoeducational and neuropsychological testing, and outpatient psychiatric services.
Our work is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based approaches, and other scientifically supported treatments. Care is tailored to concerns such as anxiety, OCD, depression, and related challenges.
-
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) refers to a group of evidence-based treatments designed to reduce distress and improve functioning.
While CBT is sometimes described as focusing on changing thoughts, modern approaches take a broader view—helping you understand patterns of thinking, behavior, and emotional responses. At Hanover CBT, we use evidence-based and process-based therapies tailored to each individual.

For therapy and psychiatry, we ask for at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel an appointment so that we can offer that time to another client.
Cancellations with less than 48 hours’ notice are charged at the standard rate, except in the case of emergencies (such as illness requiring medical care). Monday appointments must be canceled by Thursday at the scheduled time.
Appointment times are reserved specifically for you, and consistent attendance helps support the effectiveness of therapy.
For Assessment services, for reserved time blocks of more than one hour, we require four (4) business days' notice so that your extended appointment time (e.g., assessments) can be offered to another client. If you do not provide sufficient cancellation notice for an extended appointment (one hour or more), you will be charged for the reserved direct contact time, which is a portion of the total reserved time.
If you need to cancel an appointment that is one-hour or shorter, we require 48-hour notice so that your appointment time can be offered to another client. Your evaluator will try to find another time to reschedule your appointment. Except in the case of emergency, cancellations without proper notice are charged at the standard rate.
Please note that insurance companies do not provide reimbursement for canceled sessions.
Fees, Insurance & Payment
-
Fees vary depending on the service, clinician, and amount of professional time required.

Correspondingly, insurance companies typically reimburse initial intake appointments at a higher rate. Fees for shorter or longer services are prorated based on the standard 45-minute rate.

Therapy
-
Your first few sessions focus on understanding your concerns, experiences, goals, and needs.
This initial assessment typically takes between one and four sessions. You and your clinician will then work together to develop an individualized treatment plan.
-
Many clients initially meet with their clinician once or twice a week.
As therapy progresses, the frequency of appointments can change depending on your needs, goals, and progress. Your clinician will discuss what schedule is most appropriate for you.
-
Most individual therapy sessions last between 45 and 60 minutes.
Appointment length can vary depending on the type of treatment and each person's clinical needs.
-
Therapy at Hanover CBT is collaborative and active, with an approach shaped around each person's needs.
Sessions can involve understanding patterns of thinking, feeling, and behavior, developing practical skills, exploring values, and practicing new ways of responding to difficult experiences.
Your clinician will work with you to determine which approaches are most appropriate.
-
There is no set length of treatment. Your clinician will work with you to evaluate your progress and determine what level and duration of treatment best fit your needs.
-
Yes. With your permission, a family member, partner, or parent can participate in all or part of a session when clinically appropriate.
Your clinician can help determine whether involving someone else would be helpful for your treatment goals.
-
Yes. We encourage appropriate between-session communication when it supports your treatment. Email and text are primarily intended for administrative matters such as scheduling and cancellations. Clinical questions are generally addressed during a scheduled session or phone consultation.
Assessments
-
Hanover CBT provides neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluations to help clarify cognitive, academic, attention-related, learning, developmental, and emotional concerns.
The type of evaluation recommended depends on each person's needs and the questions the assessment is intended to answer.
-
The process begins with a complimentary 30-minute consultation via Zoom with an assessment provider.
During this conversation, the clinician will discuss your concerns, goals, the potential type and duration of testing, and an estimated cost.
If an evaluation is appropriate, you will receive intake paperwork before testing is scheduled.
-
The length of an assessment varies depending on the evaluation and each person's needs.
Testing is generally scheduled across one to three sessions of approximately three hours each. Additional time is required for reviewing information, scoring and interpreting results, feedback, and report preparation.
Your clinician will explain the expected process during your initial consultation.
-
Assessment consultations and feedback sessions can take place virtually, but standardized testing is ordinarily completed in person at Hanover CBT.
Some evaluations require direct observation, specialized materials, or specific testing conditions to ensure accurate results.
Your assessment provider will explain which parts of the process require an in-person appointment.
-
Before testing, we recommend getting a good night's sleep and eating beforehand. You are welcome to bring snacks, drinks, fidgets, or other items that help you feel comfortable.
If you use glasses, contacts, or hearing aids, please bring them.
If you have questions about taking your usual medications before testing, discuss them with your assessment provider in advance.
-
After testing is completed, your clinician will schedule a feedback session to discuss the findings, any applicable diagnoses, and recommendations.
When a comprehensive written report is part of the agreed assessment process, it is generally provided within four to six weeks after the feedback session.
Your clinician will explain the expected timeline for your evaluation.
-
Assessment findings can inform recommendations for academic accommodations, including additional examination time or other learning supports, when supported by the evaluation results.
Your clinician can explain how the report may be used when requesting accommodations through a school, university, or examination organization.
Final accommodation decisions are made by the relevant institution or organization.
-
Prior to participating in an IEP/504 meeting, it is highly recommended that you share the entire evaluation report with the school. Waiting until the school meeting to share the results usually results in the school needing to postpone the meeting until they have had time to review the results. The evaluation report and test score summary documents should include all of the information you need. If your assessment provider’s participation in the school meeting is still needed, this can be accomplished in either remote or in-person format at an additional cost.
Psychiatry & Medication Management
-
Hanover CBT provides outpatient psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and Whole Health Review services.
Psychiatric providers consider symptoms alongside relevant health history, medications, sleep, stress, daily functioning, and life circumstances to help inform treatment decisions.
-
Appointment frequency depends on your symptoms, medication response, and treatment needs.
When beginning a new medication or making a significant adjustment, appointments are typically more frequent, often every one to two weeks.
As your medication and symptoms stabilize, appointments may move to monthly visits and, eventually, less frequent follow-ups. For clients receiving long-term maintenance, appointments may be scheduled every three to six months, depending on clinical needs.
Your provider will determine the appropriate schedule with you.
-
To help ensure there is no interruption in your medication, it is important to keep your follow-up appointments as recommended by your provider. In most cases, prescriptions are written to last until your next scheduled medication management appointment.
If you miss appointments or delay scheduling your recommended follow-up, your provider may be unable to continue prescribing medication until you have been evaluated. Regular follow-up visits are an essential part of safe, effective medication management and are required to monitor your progress, assess for side effects, and determine whether any changes to your treatment plan are needed.
-
No. Starting, stopping, or adjusting psychiatric medication requires a scheduled appointment with your provider, either in person or by telehealth.
Medication changes cannot be made through email, text messages, patient portal messages, or refill requests.
These decisions require a clinical assessment and discussion of potential benefits, risks, and side effects.
-
Yes. Medication management appointments can take place by telehealth when clinically appropriate and permitted by licensure or authorization.
Your provider will determine whether an online or in-person appointment is suitable for your needs.
